One of the items on my Kansas bucket list was to see the sunflower field at Grinter Farms. I found out about it last year, but wasn’t able to go. (And my local attempt didn’t turn out too great…) John was deployed then anyway, so I really wanted to go this year since he was home. It was a bit of a drive from Junction City, but we fit it in as a quick stop on route to an overnight in Kansas City. It did not disappoint!
The thing that’s tricky about this field is that it’s only picturesque for a couple of weeks in August, so you basically have to stalk their facebook page to find out when to go. It wasn’t too hard to find and the closer we got, the easier it was to just follow the other people going to the field!
It was pretty crowded when we got there and I think the fact that we are alone in our pictures just shows how big the place is. We didn’t even go very deep off the roadside. It was amazing how tall the sunflowers were; taller than my mother in law, who was visiting at the time.
The Grinter family does NOT charge admission to the field, but asks that you donate $1 if you cut any of the flowers. Isn’t that great? How generous of them. Aside from gas money, this is a pretty cool FREE thing to do in Kansas. I saw group after group getting family photos taken. I’m sure they all came out gorgeous with this as a backdrop! I’m so happy that we made it out here before we left. I’ll never forget it!
