What I Wore: My Fall “Mom” Uniform & DIY Ombre Kit Review

I call this my fall mom uniform because it’s what I love to wear in the fall, and is 100% mom’s-lifestyle-safe. I can bend over and pick up my kids without worrying about my top, and I can sit without worrying about my bottom. Hooray for high waisted pants being in style. I figure, if your shirt is long enough to hide the face that they’re high waisted, they can’t be mom jeans, right?
Bonus: Tummy squishing.

My mom fall uniform consists of a sweater worn over skinny jeans, with some boot socks, and booties that are generally flats. In the colder months, I would wear a scarf of some kind over this, but it is warm enough still that I could get away with a necklace. I actually only added the long sleeved shirt under the sweater because I didn’t want to wear a jacket, and I knew I was going to be out past sunset. (Once the sun sets, it’s the arctic out there!) Most of the day, I wore this without the long sleeved under-shirt.

The necklace was a gift from my mother in law, and my youngest son had fun naming colors (although not all correctly) and making “matches” all day long. He is especially fond of the pink bead, because it is the only one that’s big like that. There is not an exact match for the pink bead.

The boots were a gift from my sister. They look like they’d be complicated to put on, with laces and buckles, but they zip up on the inner side. Win! Who has time for all of that other nonsense. I’m pretty much late to everything as it is!

I bought this sweater after I had my middle child, and I loved how soft it was. It makes me feel fancy, if that makes any sense. It’s a bit big on me now, but I still like the look of it. Oversized is a thing, right? As long as I keep the rest of the outfit slim, I feel like it keeps me from looking frumpy.

Before I go, I get a lot of comments on my hair, so I thought I would share a bit about it’s latest look:

About a year and a half ago, I got highlights because I want to be blond, but am afraid to go blond… and I haven’t done anything to it since. I had what I jokingly referred to as “Accidental ombre” and it worked for a while, but it had gotten to the point where it clearly wasn’t ombre. I was looking in the clearance section of the grocery store a few weeks ago, and found this product. I had wanted to get my hair done before my husband deployed, but never got around to it, and I knew that I wasn’t going to get my hair done once he was gone, so I figured why not. They had two boxes left, which it recommended for my hair length, so I figured it was meant to be.

It was actually pretty easy to use, and since half of my hair was already lighter, I only ended up using one box. I chose to go higher on my head than the box recommended, because my accidental ombre pretty much already started at ear level. I did end up needing to leave the bleach on for the maximum 45 minutes though, which was kind of a bummer. I did it before dinner plans, and I didn’t really give myself 45 minutes for it to sit on my hair. (Plus clean up, plus showering, plus getting ready…) That would be my only “critique”: Make sure you leave plenty of time to do this.

I took a cue from the person who photoshoped the hair of the lady on the box, and made the bleach go super high around my face, and I like how that turned out. I wish I had left the bleach on those strands longer though, because they’re slightly more subtle than I would have liked. Still better though. Overall, this was a good way to fade out my obvious roots, and make them look more intentional. I’m glad I have that second box, because assuming it doesn’t expire soon, and the product isn’t being discontinued… (Which I haven’t actually looked up…) I will totally use this again in seven months or a year or whenever my hair grows enough that I think I need another update.

The above was NOT an advertisement.
I bought this with my own money and decided to share because of comments I occasionally get on my hair.
